(A) Study on the Dynamic Analysis of a Ball Screw Feed Drive System

Feed drive systems of machine tools may experience serious vibrations or unstable motions during overspeed operation in case of insufficient damping. In this paper, a 2 D.O.F. torsional motion model plus 4 D.O.F. planar motion models are proposed in order to analyze vibration of a ball screw feed-drive system. The equations of motion are derived for the proposed models and the both natural frequencies of the system and transient responses due to driving motor speed control input are calculated. The theoretical analysis results show good agreement with experimental results measured from a laboratory feed-drive test system. Consequently we concluded that the proposed 2 D.O.F. torsional motion model plus 4 D.O.F. model can be well applicable to the vibration analysis of a ball screw feed-drive system.
