Fracture Behavior of RC Flexural Member Strengthened with Stainless Steel Wire Mesh

Various techniques are used to restore the load carrying capacity of reinforced concrete flexural members. They include active strengthening such as external post tensioning and passive strengthening such as bonding steel plates or carbon fiber sheets. In this paper, the flexural failure behavior of reinforced concrete flexural members strengthened with stainless steel wire meshes were theoretically and experimentally investigated. Total 12 specimens were tested with hydraulic servo-controlled loading system of 50ton capacity. Longitudinal steel reinforcement ratio and anchorage length of the wire mesh were selected as the main test variables. Yield loads, ultimate loads, deflection, and the steel strain were measured and compared with the theoretical predictions. Test results showed that the strengthening effect can be greatly affected by the labor skills such as stretching and anchoring the wire meshes. Further researches are needed to derive the more accurate and reasonable strengthening design procedure, which will be very valuable in the field of safety evaluation and rehabilitation of existing RC bridges.
