Optical properties of Sm^(3+) and Sm^(2+)ions doped in 10Al_(2)O_(3)·90SiO_(2) Thin Films

Sm^(2+)-doped 10Al_(2)O_(3)ㆍ90SiO_(2) thin films were prepared by coating on Al-deposited Si(100) wafers with a sol solution and heating in air as well as in H_(2) atmosphere. The sol solution for the spin coating was synthesized by hydrolysis and condensation of Tetraethyl or Thosilicate, Al(NO_(3))_(3)ㆍ9H_(2)O, and (C_(2)H_(3)O_(2))_(3)SmㆍxH_(2)O. The prepared thin films were examined with a scanning electron microscope for observing their morphologies and the photoluminescence spectra of Sm^(2+) ions were measured. The morphologies of the thin films were found to be highly dependent upon the samarium precursors and the emisson peaks due to ^(5)D_(0)→^(7)F_(0) transition of Sm^(2+) ions were highly dependent on the reduction processes of the Sm^(3+) ions and the samarium precursors. The photoluminescence spectra due to ^(5)D_(0)→^(7)F_(0) transition of Sm^(2+) ions, measured at 300K, were also highly dependent on the thickness of a deposited aluminum layer. Further studies about the effects of samarium precursors on the environmental symmetry and on dopant clustering are needed.
