Toxicity and Biodegradibility Tests of Biodiesel and Biodiesel-derived Neopentyl Polyol Ester Lubricant Oil Bases

In this study, the biodegradibility and toxicity of biodiesel and biodiesel-derived neopentyl polyol ester (NPE) lubricant oil bases were examined. Biodegradability test for various synthetic lubricant oil bases derived from biodiesel was carried out. The biodegradability was estimated under aerobic aqueous condition, according to the method by OECD 301 B, which is based on CO_(2) evolution test. The ultimate biodegradability of pentaerythritol methyl esters were estimated as 61.1∼80.3%, at 28 day with which the test compounds were indicated as ultimately biodegradable. Among the tested samples, biodiesel showed the highest biodegradability (83.5%). The validation with several criteria, regarding relative erroes of test results, toxicity control and procedure control,was performed through the biodegradability test. The test procedure was validated for all the tested lubricant oil bases and biodiesel, except for petroleum diesel. Toxicity of biodiesel (BD), biodiesel-derived neopentyl polyol ester (NPE) lubricant oil base, lubricant oil for diesel engine oil (LODE) and petroleum diesel (PD) was evaluated using earthworm ( Eisenia fefida). According to the method by OECD 207, the LC50 value of BD and NPE were estimated as 2,450 and 1,528 (mg/kg), respectively, which indicates that these compound are classified as slightly toxic compounds. The LC_(50) values of LODE and PD were estimated as 500 and 603 mg/kg, that theses compounds are classific as moderately toxic compounds. Toxicity test for biodiesel (BD), biodiesel-derived neopentyl polyol ester (NPE) lubricant oil base, lubricant oil for diesel engine and petroleum diesel (PD) was carmed out using microalgae ( Chlorella vulgaris). According to the method by OECD 201, the (EC50 ) value of BD and NPE were estimated as 84 and 69mg/l respectively, which indicates that these compound are classific as slightly toxic compound. The EC_(50) values fo LODE and PD were measured as 42 and 24 mg/mL, respectively, which shows that these compound are considered as moderately toxic compound.
