(A) Study on the Characteristics of Whirl Fire

This study was carried out to determine the characteristics of a whirl fire base on the pool fire. Flame behavior, flame height, flame temperature, and the radiant heat flux of a pool fire and a whirl fire were measured and compared between the two. Acetone and heptane were used for the sample fuel. The diameter of the fuel pan was 10cm and its height was 2cm. Flame temperature was measured with a Κ type thermocouple and radiant heat flux was measured with a heat flux sensors. The flame behavior was recorded with a video camera. To generate the whirl fire, the fuel pan was surrounded with walls with a clearance. The wall width and height were varied to find the critical point of whirl fire generation. The bottom area and clearance between walls were also varied. From this experiment, we found that combustion characteristics such as combustion rate, flame temperature, and flame height of whirl fire were far greater than that of pool fire. Therefore, we can expect that in the case of whirl fire, damage and flame spread will be more serious than with pool fire. We also found that the clearance and bottom area were important parameters for whirl fire. According to the geometry of walls, swirling phenomena by air entrainment can not occur and this critical point will be limitation of a whirl fire. Thermal buoyancy was increased with wall height and it makes a whirl fire more easily.
