Economic theory suggests that there is a positive correlation between infrastructure and economic development. Telecommunications is one of the most important types of infrastructure Communication is said to be the life blood of the economic activity. Systems of communication assume critical importance when globalization and contraction of geographic distances have become the order of the day. This study focuses on the two system of mobile communication i.e. GSM and CDMA and tries to analyze which of them will be a dominant player in the Indian market in the near future. Thus, this paper seeks to investigate how both these two technologies were initially introduced and how they were commercially developed and what are their major advantages and disadvantages over each other. Then the paper analyzes the Indian cellular industry, the role of government and other associations involved with the industry. How it has grown in the last couple of years and how has the industry changed since the introduction of CDMA technology in India. Since the time CDMA was introduced in India it has become a billion dollar question as to which one of the two technologies will dominate the Indian market and which is better than the other when we look at them from the customer point of view. By comparing the cellular industry of India with China, and comparing the services provided by both of them in India, the paper tries to theoretically come to a conclusion on which one of the technology is better. This study comes to the conclusion that in the long run the position of dominance will not be decided by the technology of the 2 service provides but rather the quality of the service provided by them. And looking at the present scenario of the service provided by them it seems that CDMA will become a dominant player in the market in the next 5-6 years.
