Technological innovation and winning strategy of imitator : a case study through mobile phone and TV industries

    This paper attempts to explain why imitators succeed in competition against technological innovators, although innovators had leaded to bring about technological innovation in the industries in which imitators exist. There are three factors for their success: timing(entering point), technological competence-enhancing, and technological differentiation. Firstly, the imitators go into the industries in order to avoid inertia when demand is definite and stable, uncertainty has disappeared since dominant design established, and industrial entry barrier is lower than other entry points though technological entry barrier is higher. Secondly, the imitators use their resources in order to absorb the technology of the first movers. The parts of the imitators using their resources is showed to be M&A(mergers and acquisitions) and hiring employees having innovative technology, strategic alliance, and restructuring the business unit. They through these methods lead to enhance technology-competence. Finally, the imitators enhanced technology-competence produce the products and technology differenced. These differentiations are patents about new technology which adding new knowledge and skills over existed technology and size, price, and capacity about the products which are much better than existed products. For that reason, the imitators can follow the first movers leading technological innovation and leapfrog. Thus, imitators based on resources can follow and leapfrog the first movers who leading technological innovation through timing(entering point), technological competence-enhancing, and technological differentiation.
