Effects of fungicides on the fruit surface inhabiting antagonistic microbes against the pathogenic fungi of apple white rot and bitter rot.

On an assumption that the chemical control of apple white rot and bitter rot does not solely rely on the antifungal activity of fungicides but affected by the surface inhabiting microbes on the surface of apple fruit, a series of experiment to elucidate the effect of fungicides on the population of antagonists against the pathogenic fungi of apple white rot and bitter rot. Four experimental plots in which the fungicide at middle of May is different each other and the control plots in which the fungicides in each spraying time were skipped over were set up. The apple fruit were harvested just prior to each chemical spray from early June till late July, and the surface inhabiting microbes were isolated by sonicating the fruit in the phosphate buffer. The total number and diversity of microbes isolated at early June were quite variable with the fungicides sprayed at middle of May. However, they were drastically reduced thereafter and eventually substituted by yeasts at late July. The number of antagonistic microbes against pathogenic fungi of white rot and bitter rot showed similar tendency with that of total number of microbes. The antagonists could not inhibit spore germination but severly inhibit the mycelial elongation. The germ tube or mycelia of the causal fungi of white rot and bitter rot were severly distorted by some antagonists, and some other stimulated sporulation of bitter rot fungus to produce abundant spores on the short germ tube. Better white rot control was obtained in the plot where the fungicides permitting higher number of antagonists were adopted.
