The purpose of this study is to examine formation of grandparents maintained families and adjustment of grandmothers raising grandchildren in rural communities. As d result of the death, divorce, disease, runaway or incapacitation of their adult children, grandparents are called upon to become the parents of their grandchildren and take on the primary responsibility for raising grandchildren. In addition to raising grandchildren, because they are associated with multiple chronic health problems, high social isolation and lower social support, these grandparents are likely to face greater risk of psychological and emotional stresses, especially depression. However there has been, so far, no concern or previous studies about these grandparents in korea and these grandparents numbers are non an increasing trend. therefore, such a grandparents' psycological and emotional well-being should be precisely understood, through such understanding, grandparents' depression caused by raising grandchildren can be effectively intervened or prevented. The major findings of this study can be summarized as follows; First, the psychological and emotional well-being of grandparents raising grandchildren were significantly more likely to be low education level unemployed, poor health. second, the psychological and emotional well-being of grandparents raising grandchildren were significantly more likely to be increased financial debts �� 새 overuse and strained on family money for medical expenses. third, the psychological and emotional well-being of grandparents raising grandchildren were significantly more likely to be rented apartment, received medical care. And number of social supporters, leisure and cultivation program, and the satisfaction of guardians or relationship service remained significant factors. fourth, the result of this study suggested that grandparents' poor health was the most determinant factor to influencing on the psycological and emotional program, unemployment, a great number of social supporters. the burden for medical expenses, and financial debts were followed. in conclusion, this study showed that grandparents raising grandchildren in poverty have been suffering from the high depression. And the main sources of their stress and depression were the order of poor health, making no use of leisure and cultivation program, unemployment, a great number of social supporters, the burden for medical expenses, and financial debts. These findings provide various theoretical and clinical perspectives and implications for social workers and professionals in planning and conducting prevention and intervention for grandparents raising grandchildren must immediately understood in lager context or legal, political, community service-related dimensions.
