Broad yellow phosphors of YAG:Ce were successfully prepared by solid state reaction method. According to X-ray diffraction(XRD) patterns, all the reflections were indexed on the basis of cubic symmetry, indicating the formation of a complete solid solution. An emission band(-530nm) due to the 4f-5d transition of Ce^(3+) was clearly observed in the photoluminescence spectra(PL). To enhance photoluminescence properties, Gadolinium(Gd) was incorporated into YAG:Ce phosphors. An emission band was shift to longer wavelength and the maximum intensity of emission decreased as the content of Gd increased. According to Holloways result, the cerium fluorescence is shifted to longer wavelengths when a larger ion is substituted for yttrium-ion component in Y_(3)Al_(5)O_(12)(YAG) and to shorter wavelengths when a smaller ion is substituted for the yttrium-ion component. White light can be obtained by the combination of non-absorbed blue emission from blue LED and broad yellow emission from Y_(3)Al_(5)O_(12):Ce phosphor.
