    The smoking rate is high in adolescents and is on the rise, and the age when they start smoking is getting younger. As the "n-generation or i-generation", teens are very much used to mass media and cyber culture and aware the cyber-space as a living space unlike the older generation. However, health education to counter these problems are not actively done. Furthermore, not only smoking prevention and cessation education not done continuously at the right time but also existing education relies heavily on printed materials and videotapes. Materials on individual and active smoking prevention and cessation education are not provided in the cyber-space. The present study was performed to evaluate the effects of smoking education according to the education method after developing the contents of smoking prevention and cessation education using the e-mail, surveying changes in knowledge and attitude toward smoking in students due to education through an e-mail. The subjects of the present study were middle school students residing in two medium cities(Gyeongju-si and Andong-si) by surveying the entire classmates in randomly selected 10 homerooms. The schools in Gyeongju-si were educated using the Internet and the schools in Andong-si were the control group. The final study subjects included 635 middle school students. Among them 332 students(experimental group) were educated to a smoking prevention program for 8 months from June 2003 to January 2004. The number of students included in the final analysis after the follow-up evaluation was 332 middle school students after excluding those transferred students and students who have not written their names down. Education materials were provided to the students in the Internet education group(Group 1) for 30 times during a 8-month period by sending e-mails, respectively. Follow-up investigation was done in February 2004 through a self-administered survey. The survey were done in the absence of the homeroom teachers or school nurses after a 10-min explaining session on the importance of the survey and guaranteeing of anonymity over the contents to be investigated. The results of providing health education through the e-mail in middle school students showed that middle school students changed positively on knowledge and attitude.
