The spectra of rare earth ions are characterised by absorption bands which are very sharp, almost line like. especially, the sharp absorption band of Nd^(3+) is good agreement with light of 585.2nm wavelength from neon gas discharge in plasma display panel(PDP). So neodymium is the most widely used in order to improve the primary color purity of PDP. To study the optical absorption properties of Polymethly metharcylate(PMMA) color filters doped with neodymium ions, they have been fabricated by a casting method. The optical properties of PMMA:Nd color filters are investigated as function of thickness, and Nd(NO_(3))_(3) concentration. Linear absorption coefficient of PMMA:Nd color filter is compared with linear absorption coefficient of soda-lime-silica glass doped with Nd_(2)O_(3) and phosphate glass doped with Nd_(2)O_(3) at various wavelength. The studies show that with increasing Nd(NO_(3))_(3) concentration and filter thickness, optical density of the PMMA:Nd color filter are increased following the Beer-Lambert's law. The maximum absorption band is centered at 581nm wavelength. And linear absorption coefficients were 0.39∼0.52 at 580nm585nm wavelength. This value is lower than the value of soda-lime-silica glass and phosphate glass. Use of PMMA:Nd color filter in PDP devices result in wider color gamut and higher color purity of devices.
