Increase of allelopathic potential of potent allelopathic rice(Kouketsumochi) by heat-shock treatment

Heat-shock treatment to Kouketsumochi known as a high allelopathic rice high cultivar and Lemont known as a low allelopathic cultivar increased allelopathic effects on barnyardgrass growth. Root exudates of Kouketsumochi and Lemont after heat-shock treatment inhibited 44.4% and 23.8% of shoot growth, 38.8% and 15.2% of root growth, 54.7% and 29.6% of dry weight of barnyardgrass, respectively. Several compounds such as tetradecanoic acid, n-hexadecanoic acid and octadecanoic acid were detected in both Kouketsu1)mochi and Lemont with or without heat-shock treatment by GC/MS. In Kouketsumochi, heat-shock treatment showed about 9-fold increase of n-hexadecanoic acid, about 5-fold increase of octadecanoic acid, about 3-fold increase of bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate in terms of peak area in chromatogram. The remarkable increase of some existing compounds with newly induced compounds by heat-shock treatment such as 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid, phenol acetate, glycoside, pentadecanoic acid, DL-alanine which were not present in the untreated Kouketsumochi, might be all together responsible for inhibitory effects on the growth of barnyardgrass.
