Biological active compounds were isolated from marine bioresources such as chlorella and starfish for the development of functional biomaterials. Biologically assays for antimicrobial, tyrosinase inhibition, anticoagulant and anticancer activities were carried out. Chlorella showed a weak antimicrobial activity against B. subtillis and E. coli. In tyrosinase inhibition assay of chlorella, IC50(inhibitory concentration) were measured as 12%. The fraction obtaind by GPC followed by IEX which had the highest anticoagulant activity, showed the highest anticancer effect. The molecular weight of the highest anticoagulant proteins was ranged as 40~66kDa on SDS-PAGE gel. In addition, a starfish, A. amurensis, was used for the isolation of an antimicrobial biomaterial. An antibacterial peptide was purified to homogeneity from hemocytes of starfish, A. amurensis, by a consecutive three-step procedure consisting of acid extraction, preparative AU-PAGE and C18 RP-HPLC. Antimicrobial assay revealed that it retains a strong potency against B. subtillis and E. coli. The molecular mass of the peptide was measured as about 12kDa on tricine SDS-PAGE gel.
