    This thesis analyzed the architectural characteristics of the prize-winning works in the competition of elementary schools to utilize the results as the planning resources of the elementary school design in the future. The study selected 8 elementary schools in Daejeon & chungcheong area, that were all designed through the competition process from 1997 to 2002. The architectural characteristics of 8 schools were analyzed by the proposed competition scheme and the design documents, concentrated on such design elements as site plan, floor plan, elevation§ion, classroom composition and facility programming. The results of this study are as following. 1) A finger-plan type is generally used in site plan design to divide classroom block into low, middle and high grade. 2) Some facilities such as a gymnasium, a dining hall, a resource center and parking lots are detached from main classroom buildings and grouped together to use those facilities jointly with community people. 3) In most cases, 2~4 classrooms are grouped to form a classroom block, and classroom walls are flexibly designed by using a movable partition to accommodate various educational activities. Corridor is also used as an multi-purpose area by broadening its width up to 4.5m. 4) A round shape roof and canopies on a flat roof are widely designed, and it leads to from visually attractive skyline. 5) pilotis, pillars that carry a building and leaving the ground floor open, are widely used to promote a visual and spatial connection on the pedestrian level.
