This thesis is an attempt to examine the nature and obligation of the church by investigating layman leadership in relation to modern culture. For this purpose, this thesis tries to find out a principle which gives a guide to understand the concept of church of John Wesley who reformed the 18th century English church. As Peter Drucker calls our modern culture as 'A Era of Uncerternty', we lives in the changing society. However, we can not realize our identity nor expect anything to coming future society without consideration of the past. In other words, we should not forget the experience of the past heartbreaking instructions. In spite of tremendous growth of church members, there are still many nonbelievers who show strong hostility to the church. In Korea, it is not hard to face the news which contains a negative aspect of christianity. Now it is time for us to ask how earnest we are in performing the obligation of church toward society. John Wesley asked a same question to carry out his missionary. Like our Korean Church, the English church came to lose their identity and dynamic character in the 18th century in England. Since the end of 17th century, English church had experienced the spiritual decay. While Spiritualist and Morabians protest against the Orthodoxy, English church realizes the traditional christianity had no power to church and people. At that time, poor local people moved to the city which expected economic improvement. To them, church did not provide any spiritual and mental guidance. Both Anglican and Non Anglican church gave no concern to the nurture of their laymen. The sermon only focused on the moral instruction and due to the increasing of the interesting to rationalism, 'Natural Theology' became to be heeled. In addition, the close relationship between church and politics makes church loose their original identity and obligations. It was John Wesley who notes the original identity and obligation of English church in 18th century. The concept of church of John Wesley is that church can provide the only hope to the people. This is why this thesis choose Wesley concept to investigate. In order to realize the nature and obligation in 20th century's changing society, the concept of church became to a matter of the theological debate. Therefore, to investigate the John Wesley's concept of church, I believe, is crucial to restore the nature and obligation of 20th church. At first, this thesis will examine the written materials of both Wesley and other peoples which deal with the layman leadership based on the concept of church of John Wesley. However, the purpose of this thesis is expended to introduce the various small groups mission which can be used to improve the layman leadership in modern church. In the first chapter, this thesis gives its basic idea for investigation including the purpose, problems, method, limitation, and the history of the study. In the second chapter, this thesis examines the specialities of the concept of church of Wesley including the notion of the 'marks of the Church'. In the third chapter, this thesis analyses how Wesley understand the complications of 18th century's English church and his concept of layman leadership in the church hierarchy. In the forth chapter, this thesis introduces the background of Wesley's utilizations of the small groups to develop the layman leadership and how his small group programs have developed and finally proposes how 20th century Korean church utilizes John Wesley's small group model to develop layman leadership.
