This study is to understand 'imago Dei' (the image of God) concept appeared in Calvin's thought and to reinterpret it in relation to his Christology. For Calvin the concept of 'Imago Dei' is a central concept to understand his anthropology. Calvin, understands man as a 'imago Dei,' the best handiwork of God distinguished from other animals. 'Imago Dei' indicates the original perfection of human beings before Adam had fallen. Since human beings had sinned, they losted 'imago Dei'. By faith in Jesus Christ, however, human beings can recover the true foundation of 'imago Dei.' Calvin says that the true knowledge of God cannot be found in the natural way, but in the Bible. Therefore, for Calvin, the knowledge of God is possible only through the Bible. Man was created by 'imago Dei' but had fallen. Calvin insists that we can recover our lost image of God by God's Grace alone. It is the purpose of God's grace to recover 'imago Dei' and lead to the salvation. The imitation of Christ can be possible by recovering 'imago Dei.' This study will explore Calvin's theory of 'imago Dei' with reference to Calvin's "Institutes." In Chapter Ⅱ, three views of man will be distinguished and delineated., namely the substantive, relational and functional views. In chapter Ⅲ, the original creation of human beings, the fallen condition of man, and the the knwoledge of God willl be explored. In chapter Ⅳ, theological meaning of Calvin's 'imago Dei' will be explored and a recovering of 'imago Dei' through Jesus Christ as a true 'imago Dei' will be studied. chapter Ⅴ, a conclusion will be summed up.
