The purpose of this study is to make an empirical investigation of family titles among Korean-Chinese people in YonByon. There have been numerous studies on terms referring to familial relatives in South and North Korea, though the number has been smaller in the former. Relatively few studies have been made on the family titles and dialects of Korean-Chinese people in YonByon. Thus this study attempted to elucidate the features of YonByon's family titles and at the same time those of familial relationships in South Korea. While YonByon's familial addressing terms share many formal features with those of South and North Koreas, YonByon's titles have their own features and conservative tendency, since YonByon has remained isolated from both South and North Koreas. Family titles in YonByon consist of words originating in North and South Koreas, and unique terms derived from communism in China, but it is titles from North Korea that constitute the majority of the addressing terms in YonByon., since most of its people emigrated from North Korea, its area neighbors North Korea, and YonByon people adopted North Korea's words, usages and grammatical systems. YonByon's family titles have their own unique features compared to those of South Korea. First of all, titles referring to relatives are confined in their usage to relatives, and addressing titles are differentiated from relational terms. Secondly, addressing titles are derived from pure Korean words, whereas relational terms tend to be borrowed from Chinese characters and phrases. Thirdly, choice of addressing titles is determined by the status of the speaker, i.e. whether the speaker is a male or female, and whether the peaker is a junior or senior to the addressee. Finally, older usages of family titles are well preserved in YonByon, since YonByon people have lived isolated geographically from South and North Koreas. This study tried to present a general overview of family titles in YonByon in order to make it serve as basic data for further investigation of words of South Korean origin. Hopefully, additional studies will be performed on other linguistic aspects of Korean-Chinese people in YonByon area.
