    Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is an enzyme catalyzing reversible hydration of CO_(2). It was shown recently that CA from tobacco binds to salicylic acid and involves in plant defense reaction. Our previous data showed that in vivo CA of A. thaliana contains disulfide bond, suggesting that its activity might be controlled by cellular redox condition. It was also known that NCE103, which is a CA homolog of S.cerevisiae but does not have CA catalytic activity, is essential for aerobic growth of yeast. In order to investigate why NCE103 deletion mutant cannot grow aerobically and what biochemical function of CA support its aerobic growth, we attempted to isolate plant genes which were able to support aerobic growth of NCE103 yeast. From this endeavor we successfully isolated several genes encoding three different forms of CAs and other proteins which support aerobic growth by different degrees. Their characteristics and possible functions in aerobic growth are discussed.
