    Microstrip patch antennas have a number of useful and interesting features due to low-cost, low profile, conformability, reduced weight, and ease of fabrication. In many applications, the requirements on both bandwidth and physical size are quite stringent. Typically, the antenna is required to have a bandwidth exceeding 10 %, a resonant length of about 0.25 λ0, and thickness not exceeding 0.05 λ0 in one of the bands. During the last two decades, many investigators have dedicated their efforts to creating new design or variation to the original antenna that produce either wider bandwidths or multiple frequency operation in a single element. In this paper, to design the dual-band antenna for mobile communication both cellular system and PCS system, a wideband and dual-frequency quarter-wave U-shaped patch antenna with two unequal arms is designed and studied experimentally. In order to increase the antenna bandwidth, an E-shaped microstrip patch and a U-shaped microstrip patch with unequal arm are etched on the thicker substrate. And the dual-band microstrip antenna can be realized by coupling a U-shaped patch with an E-shaped patch. Also the antenna size can be reduced by the shorting wall to the edge of the U-shaped patch, a parastic radiator. The antenna bandwidth and radiation characteristics are calculated by CST Microwave Studio 3 simulation software, and compared with the experimental results. The proposed antenna is simple in structure compared with the regular stacked or coplannar parastic patch antennas. Experimental results show that the return loss is less than -10 dB with bandwidth of 14.7 % in 900 MHz band and bandwidth of 20 % in 1.8 GHz band, a resonant length of about 40.5 mm, and thickness of 9.375 mm.
