The cancer disease is changing into the chronical disease which needs continuous care and self-care. The reasons why the veteran nurses give the telephone follow-up to the patients who discharged from hospital after taking the chemotherapy are to help cancer patients recover from the disease giving the patient-centered qualitative cares to the cancer patients, to reduce possible side effects with the help of higher self-care performance and to expand the nursing role through getting rid of the stress of family members who take care of the cancer patients. These merits make the telephone follow-up considered as the effective method. In this study, the trial of using the telephone follow-up in the clinical nursing after giving the patients who discharged from hospital after taking the chemotherapy and their family caregivers the telephone follow-up and understanding effects on the self-care performance and the role stress of the family caregivers is tested. This study is designed to test the effect of telephone follow-up on the self-care performance of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and role stress of the family caregivers, using "Nonequivalent Control Group Non-synchronized Design". This experiment was conducted from January 1, 2004 to March 31, 2004. Experimental subjects are 72 cancer patients undergoing chemo- therapy(total number of experimental group : 18, control group : 18) and family caregivers(total number of experimental group : 18, control group : 18) in G national university hospital located in J city, Gyeonsangnamdo province. The researcher and two professors modified and used the tools for measuring the self-care behavior of the hematologic cancer patients of Lee, Hye-Young(2000) and for measuring infection prevention self-care behavior of Lee, Young Ran(2003). And we revised the tool of Song, In Sook(1998) which was made after observing the family caregivers who were taking care of the chronical disease to measure the family caregivers role stress. The computer software package "SPSS for windows(Version 10.0)" was used to analyze collected data. General characteristics of the subjects were tested in percentage and absolute number. The homogeneity of two groups was tested by "Chi-square" and "t-test" method. The hypotheses selected were tested by "paired t-test", "t-test", "Mann-Whitney U Test" and "Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test" method. The result of this study are as follows : 1. Hypothesis 1. "the self-care performance of the experimental group undergoing telephone follow-up will be higher than that of the control group" was supported. 2. Hypothesis 2. "the role stress of the experimental group undergoing telephone follow-up will be lower than that of the control group" was supported. According to the above result, the telephone follow-up can be estimated as effective nursing intervention which can be used in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and family caregivers.
