    Apoptosis is a naturally occuring process of physiologic cell death that plays a key role in homeostasis in variety of tissues. Also, apoptosis in placenta has been described in placental tissue of pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH). As a result of cDNA expression array assay, Caspase-10 and Death domain receptor-3 (DDR-3) were known as important apoptotic factor in PIH placenta. But precise location and staining pattern of these proteins in normal and PIH placenta are not yet clear. This study is performed to determine the localization of Caspase-10 and DDR-3 expression relative to the occurrence of apoptosis in placenta complicated by PIH and to investigate the intensity of expression of these proteins in placenta tissue and percentage of immunoreactive positive cells. Placental tissue were obtained from women who underwent elective cesarean section from PIH (n=8) and normal (n=15). Immediately after delivery, placental tissues was collected from the maternal-fetal interface and washed in saline. All samples were snap frozen in liquid nitrogen and stored at -70℃ until further usage. The immunostaining for caspase-10 and DDR-3 were performed on paraffin-embedded placental section using rabbit polyclonal anti-caspase-10 and DDR-3 antibody according to avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) metnhod. And then the antibody complexes were visualized by incubation with dianinobenzidine tertahydrochrolide (DAB) chromogen. Statistical analysis was done with personal computer software-10. The caspase-10 and DDR-3 were mainly expressed in the trophoblast and syncytial knot. In PIH placenta, caspase-10 was strongly expressed in trophoblast and syncytioal knot and weakly expressed in stroma and vessel. DDR-3 was moderately expressed in syncytial knot and weakly expressed in trophoblast.
