    Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is one of the most potent inducers of vascular permeability and is a powerful mitogen for endothelial cells in early diabetic retinopathy. VEGF may play a role in the pathogenesis of neovascularization and in the increase of vascular permeability that characterized diabetic retinopathy. Ascorbic acid has been reported for neuroprotective effect in retinal ischemic damage recently. So author planned to evaluate the neuroprotective effect of ascorbic acid on diabetic retina, especially focused on VEGF in retinal tissue. This study was performed to 3 groups, control rats, streptozotocin-diabetic rats with a 5 week duration of diabetes, and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rat treated with ascorbic acid starting from induction of diabetes. Ascorbic acid was injected into peritoneal cavity 500 mg/kg after diabetes induction. Histopathological changes involved to retinal thickness were assessed by H-E stain and VEGF immunohistochemistry. Total retinal thickness was decreased in diabetic rats compared with control rats.
