As a Southern writer, Tennessee Williams took South as setting in most of his plays. His characters are people who are mattoids, deformities and nymphomaniacs. That is, they are outsiders or fugitive kind who do not adapt themselves to reality and who are trying to escape from it. Therefore it can be said that all of them are very similar. Also the themes of his plays are loneliness, losses, fear of death, pursuit of the lost ideals, conflict between right and wrong, the great necessity of pity among lonely alienated people and so on. On the techniques of the plays, Williams broke the boundary of the traditional realistic plays, and examined many kinds of the theatrical devices such as slides, lightings and sound effect. With these devices he created mood of the plays, made free use of poetic language and depicted persons who were individuals and symbols at the same time. The Glass Menagerie is the one of the Williams' plays which has the above-mentioned factors, but if it has something special compared with his other works, it has consciously autobiographic factors. There are rare plays such as The Glass Menagerie which consciously dramatized his early life with his mother and a sister. Then like fugitive kind who are characters of Williams' plays, his family are also frustrated from reality and fall into illusions. The Glass Menagerie is a memory play. The narrator, Tom says he wants to give you truth in the pleasant disguise of illusion. All of the characters in this play have illusions. Amanda lives on the pleasant memory of the Blue Mountain in the past, Laura lives on her illusionary little glass menagerie and Tom lives on a illusion of adventures. Their illusions are inevitable to manage the lives. But in accordance with settling the situations such illusionary world turns into the world of heartbreak, despair, conflict, failure and gives pain and anger to the third people. Considering it, we have to think about the negative aspect. These illusions are not their private use but ours, and it is said that “necessity evil in our lives. The truth Williams is trying to suggest is that the necessity of understanding, love among people who fall in illusions and of courage to face reality.
