The primary purpose of this thesis is to describe in terms of loan words in the Middle English period how English become a world language. In other words, in this thesis I have discussed the various ways in which English, especially the English language in the Middle English period, was affected by the contact with French. The organization of this thesis is as follows. In Chapter 1, I have briefly mentioned what I wanted to do in this thesis. In Chapter 2, I have discussed the definition of 'borrowing' in language. Middle English could borrow the French words espects, especially in vocabulary. In Chapter 3, I have discussed the French influence on English. After the Norman Conquest, French began to permeate into English enormously. The result was that English loaned a very large vocabulary from French. Also this chapter paied a little bit more attention to the sociolinguistic aspects of "borrowing: as such, more precisely to the double borrowing from both Norman French and Central(Parisian) French into English since the time of the Norman Conquest. In Chapter 4, The General Prologue to the Canterbury Tales and A Chaucer Glossary were=looked at as a sample and were analyzed to see how loan-words from French were used. From this analysis, we may say that generally native resources such as English pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, and the like give a fundamental frame in English, while loanwords, mostly nouns, verbs, and adjectives, express some types of content words. The scope of this thesis is not just confined to the description of procedure by which words are identified as loan words. Evidence observed in this research leads to the conclusion that though English contains countless foreign words in it, it retains its own characteristics, and that it seems to have a wonderful power of absorbing foreign elements quite naturally, and makes them its own.
