(A) Study of the Effect of English Listening Strategy Use on English Listening Comprehension

This study investigates the effects of using listening strategy for listening comprehension of middle school students in Korea. Today as the world is getting smaller and smaller, it is evident that the importance of English has been accepted as the international language of wider communication. The ultimate purpose of English Education is to communicate with people from different countries. The first basic skill in communication is listening, which must precede all others-reading, writing, and speaking. The improvement of listening comprehension ability has recently become one of the most important aspects of language skills, and no communication can be accomplished without listening comprehension. Contrary to the common perception that listening is a passive ability, many linguists have claimed that it is an active and creative ability which infers the meaning of utterances and interprets what the speaker intended to communicate. However, up until now listening has been largely neglected in English Education in Korean Middle schools. Therefore, in this thesis, I proposed listening strategies which use a teaching method that helps the students develop and improve their English listening skills. These strategies are within the limits of Oxford's direct listening strategies, i.e., memory, cognition, and compensation strategy. In this learning method, the listening process is divided into three stages. They are set forth: pre-listening, while-listening, and post-listening. Each strategy was used in each stage. The experiment showing the effects of the english listening strategy use was practiced. As an evaluation procedure for this study, learners' interests and attitudes toward learning English were investigated before and after the experiment and the results of the "English listening comprehension test to measure English listening comprehension ability" were analyzed before and after the experiment. According to the results of this experiment, the english listening strategy use helped raise learners' interests and attitudes toward learning English in English listening classes and motivated the students to study harder. In addition, listening comprehension ability was increased significantly higher than before. Therefore, the english listening strategy use is effective in improving the skills of english listening comprehension. The research findings propose the followingsuggestions: 1) English teachers and students need to recognize the importance of listening strategy use. 2) It is necessary to teach the students listening strategies constantly for a long time. 3) It is important to improve students attitudes toward studying English.
