(A) Qualitative Study on the Effects of Dance Sport Activities for the Aged

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of any change and recognition in physical, psychological, emotional and social development through qualitative research in the potential and practical effects of dance sport activities on the aged. Furthermore, the study also intends to clarify which roles dance sport may play as one of living exercise program to help the aged live in healthy condition. Out of the aged population(65 years old or older) who live in Gwangju metropolitan city and Jeolla province as of Year 2003, this study sampled 30 elder people who learned dance sport in lifelong education centers attached to campus or age welfare centers in their neighborhood. They were all asked to join open-ended questionnaire survey. Out of those respondents, 8 people were specially selected for in-depth interview to collect qualitative research data by means of participatory observation and in-depth interview. The results of this study can be outlined as follows: 1. In terms of physical effects, it was found that the participation of elder people in dance sport activities made considerable contribution to disease prevention, health promotion, better fitness, right daily habit, etc. in course of aging. In addition, dance sport was effective to enhance their body flexibility and muscular strength of lower limb, and helped them take right body shape and posture. 2. Positive impacts of participation in dance sport activities on the psychological and emotional change in elder group include delight, self-confidence and self-realization. Meanwhile, it was notable that dance sport activities brought them a little brighter and more hopeful attitude as well as change to positive characters. Moreover, the aged who joined dance sport activities showed higher motivation in every matter and thankful minds than before. 3. Positive impacts of participation in dance sport activities on the development of elder's sociality include more active communication or feedback with family or neighborhood and sound personal relationship with others based on familiarity and membership via physical activities, which may lead to harmonious relationship with community. Additionally, dance sport activity - one of favorable leisure activities - motivated the aged to pay more attention to latest cultural trends such as computer, Internet and English, and have even self-esteem as a social member. 4. As factors to hinder the participation in dance sports, it raised the memorizing of an action or an order due to decrease of a memory, and the difficulty of understanding due to foreign words. 5. The participation motive aiming at utilizing leisure after resignation was high, and what being desired was shown to positively hope to take part in society, keeping on maintaining a healthy life. Therefore, it is recommended that dance sport should be developed into various programs suitable for helping elder people live their own healthy life in old age, so that it may be facilitated and popularized as one of living exercise events to enhance their health and life quality.
