(A) study on the Improvement of English Proficiency and Interest through Dictation

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of dictation as one of the efficient ways to improve the improvement of English proficiency at schools. The subjects of fifty second-year middle school students were divided into two groups; a control group(24 students) and an experimental group(26 students). The experimental group was given the dictation practice during every class for 20 weeks, but the control group wasn't. The data for analyzing the experimental results were collected from two kinds of English proficiency tests. The questionnaires were given two times before and after the experiment, in order to investigate changes of students' own interests, self-confidence, and self-autonomy in learning four skills of English. The first achievement test in school including listening test was chosen as the data of pre-test and the third achievement test in school including listening test was analyzed to be compared with the data of pre-test. All the listening tests included in the achievement tests were administered by the Ministry of Education. As a result of this experiment, this writer could find out that the dictation practice enhanced students' general proficiency and interest in English studying. In conclusion, according to the analysis of the data I would like to recommend these dictation activities to teachers and students as one of effective and useful teaching-learning devices if they are to help the learners of English improve their general English proficiency and interest in learning English.
