The purpose of this paper is to investigate Gilssam words in Jeollanam-do region by linguistic method which are disappearing in rapid social change, focusing on the vocabulary in the weaving process and the names of the instruments. The results from this study were as follows: First, palatalization of /k/ family is observed in words such as /cˇ□ri ptE/, /dolcˇ□s/, /silcˇ□s/. Second, fortis which appears in words such as /k′arak/, /cˇ′□ncˇi/, /cˇ′at^(h)uri/, /k′□silrida/, /samt′abal/ has something to do with Jeollanam-do dialects in general. Third, addition like /l/,/n/,/ŋ/ appears in words such as /punt^(h)E/, /pEptEŋi/, /samk′olpEŋi/. Fourth, /e/ and /ε/ are realized as /E/ because they are merged in the course of time. Fifth, Umlaut phenomenon appears in words such as /samkutEŋi/, /samsErida/ and the fronting of ′u> u¨ > i, o > o¨ > E′ is so strong that it changes /u¨/ and /o¨/ into /i/ and /E/. Sixth, there are also many words showing various vowel change like 'o > □', ' i > u', 'o¨ > E', 'a > o', '□ > a', 'o > u' Seventh, we can see morphological characteristics in suffixes such as '_게/개', '_애/에', '_이', '_기', '-아리' and nouns are derived by attaching them to verb. Eight, following results are found from the observation of the meaning. -The fact that Almost half of words are compound words comprises linguistic property of the society of weaving hemp cloth. They make compound words from existing language rather than create a new vocabulary. -Many of the dialectal Gilssam words are not found in the standard language. -Most of Gilssam words are native ones mainly because they like to use native words rather than because the work orginally belongs to the family. -There are few adjectives in Gilssam words because of monotonous color of cotton cloth. -In contrast to various names called in other jobs, the name for people who are engaged in Gilssam are rarely found except /samkutcˇEŋi/, /pEtwispa/.
