Life Satisfaction in Later Life Influenced by Socio-familyvariables and intergenerational Exchanges

This study has been performed to investigate various dimensions of life satisfaction in later life such as self-esteem, housing satisfaction, and satisfaction with family life. In theoretical model, it is hypothesized that the satisfaction is influenced by socio-familial backgrounds and intergenerational exchanges with children. In this study, satisfaction of the 102 elderly aged 60 or more were sampled in Choong-Nam province in 2005. In this study, the results are summarized that the older groups who live in three generation household and have domestic roles are more likely to have higher satisfaction with their life in general. In addition, education and exchanges with children positively affect satisfaction. Overall, variables of individual features and ecosystem are also meaningful. They do not explain much, but prove to be meaningful. Based upon this result, it is recommended to prepare social situation in the perspective of individual, family, and local community to improve the quality of the life for the aged. In addition, more programs should be utilized for the group of weak tendency; for instance, older groups of domestic chore burden caring grandchildren should be given special welfare meal program of intergenerational pastime program.
