(A) Study on Climatic Factors Influencing the Deterioration of Exterior Wall Materials in Buildings

This study was to examine deterioration of exterior wall materials in buildings and analyze causes of the deterioration by all factors affecting the deterioration. For this objective, 24 major cities in Korea were selected as a sampling region and data on domestic climatic factors affecting potentially exterior wall materials of buildings were collected, arranged and analyzed. This study was an attempt to provide fundamental information for calculation of affecting coefficient by each climatic factor in order to establish design techniques of durable building. Detailed methodology is as follows. First, the previous foreign and domestic studies related to climate were examined and the validity of this study was reviewed. Second, deterioration of exterior wall materials in buildings were analyzed and all affecting factors of the deterioration were examined. Then, climate-related affecting factors were derived and the correlation between exterior wall material and deterioration were analyzed. Third, the recent 10-year data of climatic factors affecting exterior wall materials of buildings from the last 10 years were collected and analyzed, and database was built for establishment of the design technique of durable buildings. Fourth, on the basis of the built database, an expert system was developed to obtain easily detailed data by regions of climatic-affecting factors. In this study, the author built a database relating to domestic major climatic factors affecting the deterioration of exterior wall materials required as fundamental data for reasonable design of durable exterior wall materials, and then carried out mapping. The findings of this study are as follows. 1) All affecting factors resulted in deterioration of exterior wall materials in buildings were examined and major climatic factors, which should be considered with a viewpoint of design of durable building, were obtained. 2) 24 major regions, in which construction is relatively going on in Korea, were selected and the current conditions of each climatic factor were analyzed by regions. Then, on the basis of the result, criteria of materials selection were suggested from a viewpoint of climatic factors. 3) When an effect level of each climatic factor by regions was symbolized as a coefficient, 4 regions - Seoul, Suwon, Busan and Ulsan - got 25 points or more. It suggested that various relevant climatic factors should be further considered in design of durable building. 4) An expert system was developed to get findings of this study more rapidly and correctly, which allowed obtaining analysis data of various climatic factors by months, years and regions easily. Then, mapping was applied to understand distribution by region for the selected climatic factors clearly.
