Isometric Point of Femoral Attachment of Popliteus Muscle-Tendon Complex : Cadaveric Experimental Study

    Purpose: To determine the isometric point of femoral insertion of popliteus muscle-tendon complex and its relationship with lateral femoral epicondyle. Materials and Methods: Four unpaired cadaveric knees were dissected and isometric points of specimens were measured using computer controlled motion capture analysis system (Qualisys AB, Partille, Sweden). Results: Majority of isometric points of femoral insertion of popliteus tendon complex were situated at 'distal and posterior portion' of lateral femoral epicondyle, in all 4 knees. Mean distance between most of the isometric points and lateral femoral epicondyles was 9.7mm (range 8.6-□0.9mm). Insertion points for main fibers of popliteus tendon were found at 'distal and posterior portion' of lateral femoral epicondyle. Conclusion: Most of isometric points of femoral insertion of popliteus tendon complex are situated at insertion points of main fibers of popliteus tendon, on 'distal and posterior portion' of lateral femoral epicondyle. Femoral tunnel for 'posterolateral corner sling procedure' should be placed 9.7mm (range 8.6-□0.9mm), distal and posterior from lateral femoral epicondyle; which corresponds to insertion points for main fibers of popliteus tendon.
