Radiofrequency Ablation on VX2 Carcinomas of Rabbit Femurs : Experimental Study on Effectiveness

Purpose : To evaluate the effectiveness of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in the treatment of experimentally induced VX2 carcinomas in rabbit femurs. Materials and Methods : Thirteen New Zealand white rabbits (weight: 2.5-3.0 kg) were included in this study. Prepared VX2 carcinoma fragments were inoculated in the right distal femurs of rabbits under fluoroscopic guidance. Pre-RFA MR images were obtained 7-17 days after implantation of VX2 carcinomas to determine the size of tumors. Axial and coronal T2-weighted images, pre- and post-enhanced T1-weighted images were scanned. One day after pre-RFA MR scans, fluoroscopic-guided RFAs were performed 2-5 times according to the tumor size at 60W for 5-6 minutes per each session under general anesthesia. Cool-tip^(TM) radiofrequency system (Radionics, Burlington, MA, USA) with single internally cooled electrode with 1 cm active tip was used. Post-RFA MR images were obtained within 1 day after RFA. Rabbits were sacrificed and 13 femurs were harvested following the post-RFA MR images. Pre- and post-RFA MR images were compared and histopathologic examination was reviewed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy. Result : Mean size of VX2 carcinomas was 11×32 mm on pre-RFA MR images. All procedures were technically successful. Complete tumor ablation was achieved in 9 of 13 rabbits which were found free of viable tumor on histopathologic examination. Residual tumors were found in 4 of 13 rabbits. Conclusion : RFA seems to be a feasible, effective modality for the treatment of VX2 carcinoma-induced bone tumors in rabbit femurs. This study suggests that RFA may be a potentially promising procedure in the palliative treatments of bone metastasis. In addition, MRI could be a useful tool for assessing bone tumor ablation.
