Acoustic pharyngometry in snoring patients

Background and Objectives: Obstructive sites of upper airway should be identified before determining the treatment of choice in snoring patients. The aim of this study was to measure pharyngeal area in snoring group and nonsnoring group with acoustic pharyngometry, and to analyze the different results from two groups. Materials and Methods: we devided 280 volunteers into four groups with history of snoring, body mass index and sex. Results: Between group A (male, snoring(+), BMI>27) and group B (male, snoring(-), BMI≤27), applying t-test for independent variables showed the significant differences in glottic area at supine, oropharyngeal junction area at supine, mean pharyngeal cross-sectional area at sitting, pharyngeal volume at sitting, pharyngeal volume at supine. Between group C (female, snoring(+), BMI>27) and group D (female, snoring(-), BMI≤27), results showed the differences in oropharyngeal junction area at sitting, glottic area at supine, mean pharyngeal cross-sectional area at supine, pharyngeal volume at sitting, pharyngeal volume at supine are statistically significant. Conclusion: When measuring individual parameters by acoustic pharyngometry, some parameters show the significant different results in comparing between groups divided with BMI, history of snoring.
