Study on the Characteristics of 3 MeV Radio Frequency Quadroupole

A RFQ linac, which will accelerate a 20 mA proton beam energy from 0.05MeV to 3MeV has been developed and tested. The 324 cm-long 4-vane type RFQ consists of two segments coupled by a coupling plate and composed of 4 sections with 36 slug tuners. Its main function is to tune the resonant frequency and adjust the quadrupole field profile along the cavity and provide field stabilization against external perturbations such as fabrication error. The initial result of the bead test showed that the resonant frequency was somewhat higher than 350MHz. In order to provide the cavity with a rather fine tuning, we used to use slug tuners, stabilizer rods and a coupling plate. A high power RF test has been done to check the cavity characteristics. The required peak RF power is 535kW and the pulse width and the repetition rate for the test are 50μs, 0.1Hz respectively. The proton beam current was measured by a Faraday cup so that we could check the amount of the extracted beam.
