    γ-aminobutyric acid(GABA) is well known as a key inhibitory neurotransmitter in both vertebrate and invertebrate. Several insect species were described to have GABAergic neuron in the CNS but this neuron was not mentioned from the silkworm. Neurotrophins, represented by nerve growth factor(NGF), brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF), neurotrophin(NT)-3, and NT-4, are essential to the normal development and maintenance of the nervous system of vertebrates. Little was known about localization neurotrophins in insect central nervous system(CNS) and their functions in insect species. In this experiment, we identified GABA-, BDNF-, NT-3- and NT-4-expressing neurons in the larval brains of the wax moth Galleria mellonella and the silk moth Bombyx mori, using the immunocytochemical method. In the G. mellonella brain, two pairs of BDNF-expressing neurons and four to five pairs of NT-3-expressing neurons were detected in median region, whereas four pairs of NT-3-expressing neurons and six pairs of NT-4-expressing neurons were seen in lateral region. In the B. mori brain, four to five pairs of bilateral GABAergic, NT-3-and NT-4-expressing neurons were found in median region, whereas four to seven pairs of GABAergic, NT-3-and NT-4-expressing neurons were identified in lateral region.
