Heat Treatment Effects of Legume Seeds on Protein Degradation in the Rumen and productivity of Dairy Cows

    Three studies were conducted to evaluate heat treatment effects of several protein supplements on ruminal protein degradability and lactation performance of dairy cows. In order to examine rumen bypass rate various physico-chemical parameters were analyzed and a rumen simulated continuous culture system was employed. Productive performance of lactating dairy cows was measured by feeding heat treated soybeans and lupine seeds. The results obtained are summarized as follows: The nitrogen solubility index (NSI) was orderly ranked as raw soy bean(54.3%) > cotton seed(23.9%) > raw lupine seed(22.4%) > flaked lupine seed(13.3%)> soybean meal(10.4%) > flaked soybean(7.6%) > and high correlations(p raw soybean(75.6%) > flaked lupine seed(69.7%) > cotton seed(51.2%) > soybean meal(27.0%) > flaked soybean(19.0%). In vitro protein degradability of protein supplements tested ranged from 96.6% to 86.5%. With heat processing, protein degradability of raw soybean decreased from 91.7% to 87.2%, as was the same observed for raw lupine seed of 95.5% down to 91.2%. In a continuous culture system, raw soybean and raw lupine seed showed high degree of protein degradability(75.4 and 67.9%), which was followed by flaked lupine seed(61.9%) and flaked soybean(38.4%).
