Generally, curbs are used to control drainage, prevent vehicles from leaving the pavement at hazardous points, delineate the edge of the pavement, present a more finished appearance, and assist in orderly development of the roadside. When a vehicle scrubs or impact a curb, curb shape and dimensions decidedly affect vehicle trajectory and the likely potential for driver recovery of vehicle control. This study was concerned with the important safety aspect of curb. The approach taken to investigate the effect of curb on vehicle behavior included a simulated impacts using the commercial program of LS-DYNA 3D. A curb (200mm height) were selected for detailed study because it represent the curb configurations most commonly used throughout KOREA. For the determination of the redirection capacity of the curb, twelve curb impacts were simulated on the selected curb. The simulation included impacts of 60, 80, 100, and 120 km/h at 5, 12.5, and 20 degree. Also, The impacts of the combination of the curb & the guardrail were simulated for the check of the vehicle ramping & snagging. The conclusion in this study shows ; The redirection capacity of the curb is the function of the impact velocity & the impact angle. In case of the impact velocity(km/h) times the impact angle(degree) is below 500, the vehicle is redirected. The use of rubbing rails is recommended to avoid bumper snagging.
