Nowadays the demand for cells which have high capacity rises sharply as the number of mobile users grows up dramatically. As a result of the decrease of cell size to provide high capacity, Mobile IP - the current standard mobility protocol - has been faced with some limitations such as high handoff control signal overhead, high handoff delay, and packet loss. Micro-mobility protocols have been designed to overcome the drawbacks of Mobile IP. Although current micro-mobility protocols have tried to cope with the limitations of Mobile IP, they still have some defects. Hierarchical Mobile IP has high handoff delay caused by the creation of tunnels. Cellular IP and HAWAII cannot surely guarantee any packet loss and duplication in some network topologies. Most micro-mobility protocols waste both wired and wireless network resources during handoff. In this thesis, we propose the enhanced semi-soft handoff architecture based on the decision of a mobile node to cope with the limitations of previous micro-mobility protocols. In the proposed micro-mobility architecture, a mobile node's decision as a key factor for the entire handoff procedure helps to support stable and efficient handoff. The proposed architecture improves previous bi-casting mechanisms to provide seamless handoff without packet loss and duplication. To guarantee QoS after handoff, it is built on MPLS-based QoS architecture. This enhanced micro-mobility architecture tries to minimize the waste of network resources including wireless resources. Based on the explicit decision of a mobile node, the enhanced semi-soft handoff architecture can achieve its goals - seamless handoff, fast handoff, QoS guarantee, no waste of wireless resources, and so on.
