The purpose of this study is to provide patients with basic data of nursing intervention encouraging the coping capacity for the stress after investigating the stress and coping level of stem cell transplantation process tatients including admission and readmission group in who had been inserted hickman catheter. From the 25th of July 2004 to the 5th of October 2004, admission and readmission patients who at C university hospital, Seoul were taken for the study. Research tools used were the Stress Scale(range 1-5 point) developed by the researcher on the basis of results gained from Kim, Jeoung-Mi's(1997) and Moon, Ju-Ryung's(2000) research, and the Coping Scale that was modificated by Mishel & Sorenson'(1993) WCCL translated by Choi, Eun-Suk(1993). Collected data were analyzed through frequency, Mean values, percentages, t-test, Chi-square test, Duncan test, ANOVA and Pearson's Correlation coefficient. The results of this study were as follows. 1. In the general chracteristics of the stem cell transplantation process patients was follows, 55.8% of admission group was female which was more than male. The age was range from the largest number subjects 30 to 39 years old(30.9%). 65.4% of the subjects was unmarried, the largest number of subjects was high school graduate(53.9%). 36.5% of the subjects was a monthly income less than two millions to three millions won. The percentage of subjects with religion(65.5%) was more than that of those without religion(34.6%). The largest number of subjects had ALL(acute lymphocyte luekemia)(61.5%), the first chemothearapy(55.8%). 57.4% of readmission group was female which was more than male, the age of the largest number subjects was ranged in 30 to 39 years old(29.5%). 59.0% of the subjects was unmarried, the largest number of subjects was high school graduate(54.1%). 32.8% of the subjects was a monthly income less than two millions to three millions won. The percentage of subjects with religion(70.5%) was more than that of those without religion(29.5%). The largest number of subjects had AML(acute myelcocyte luekemia)(67.5%), the fifth chemotherapy(32.8%). The Chi-square test of admission and readmission group for general characteristics showed not different significantly. 2. The stress level of stem cell transplantation process patients was measured at the minimum point of 2.56, the maximum of 4.41, and the average of 3.24, in the case of the admission group, while it was at the minimum of 2.25, the maximum of 4.2, and the average of 3.38 in the case of readmission group. The t-test of the stress level showed not different significantly(t=-1.122, p=.23). The coping level of stem cell transplantation process patients was measured at the minimum of 2.98, the maximum of 4.19, and the average of 3.46 in the case of admission group, while it showed at 2.49, 4.39, 3.54, respectively, in the case of the readmission group. The t-test of the coping level showed not different significantly(t=-.984, p=.341). 3. The stress and coping level of stem cell transplantation process patients were not different significantly for the admission group and it's general characteristics such as a sex, age, marital state, educational level, a monthly income, religion, name of diagnosis. However, the coping lever was different significantly for a monthly income(F=4.402, p-.008). As a result of post verification by Duncan test, the subjects with a monthly income more than three millions won were shown higher for the coping level than with about three millions won in the cases of readmission group. The stress level was different significantly according to educational state(F=4.226,p=.005), name of diagnosis(F=5.423, p= .007). In addition, it was found that the subjects with primary school graduates less than were lower the stress level than with middle school graduates, subjects with ALL were lower the stress level than others. The coping level of readmission group was different significantly according to a monthly income(F=3.076, p= .035). In addition, it was found that the subjects less than one million won and more than three millions won were higher the coping level than one million won to three millions won. 4. Negative correlation was found between stress and coping levels for admission group, but it was not significant statistically. However, a positive correlation was statistically shown between the stress and emotion focused coping levels(r= .405, p= .001) as well as between stress and total coping level(r= .353, p=005) in the case of the readmission group. In the study, th stress and coping of stem cell transplantation process patients including admission and readmission group in who had been inserted hichman catheter were net defferent significantly. The correlation that was shown between the stress and coping level was worth consideration in the nurse practices.
