(A) Study on Effective English Teaching Methods for Elementary School students through Animation : Chiefly on Listening and Speaking skills

The most desirable education of a foreign language is equally to develop the communicative competence. Thus new deucational materials have been developed to more efficiently handle the demand. The purpose of this study is to show the teaching method fitting the student's psychological developing level, to have them get interested in English learning and to develop their listening and speaking ability. In learning foreign language, the use of audio-visual materials offers a direct access to the pronunciation, intonation and accent of native speakers. According to the results of reserch in my school, animation is the most interesting educational materrial. Namely, English teaching method using animation is suitable to learn foreign language due to giving more powerful impression visually to children. Animation video materials assist in understanding the cultural background of the language being leamed, and in showing the actual circumstances in which the language is used. Also, video appears to be a very desirable medium for second-language teaching and acquisition. This study involved preparing a Theory-based hypothesis of education used as a reflection medium and, then vertified the hypothesis through the use of experimental materials. We didn't have enough experimental group and control group for an accurate comparison, however. Thus I cannot but confess the experimental results limited in some cares. The study lasted from September 1999 to October 2000. To measure the effectivness of video materials, a listening and a speaking test were conducted by the Institute of Educational Evaluation two times a year respectively. The results of this study are as follows; 1. Teaching-learning activities for developing listening-speaking abilities have made learners not only induce interest, but also develop the ability of conversation. 2. Searning through visual material made the students to have interest and motivation 3. Students become closer with one another while they interact in class activities and prepare for animation performance. 4. Animation video is very effective to get the culture and background of the England and America. In conclusion, animation can be employed as a main or supplementary technique which offers the above-mentioned benefits to learners if teachers bring it to the class with enthusiasm. Finally, finding effective teaching method and means should go on, particularly teaching material should develop in teacher's consideration, effort, interest.
