The purpose of this study was to construct viable and flexible school curricula for a five-day workweek, based on the national and local curricula guidelines and the needs of students, teachers and parents, in an effort to discuss how to be ready for the five-day school workweek. For that purpose, the concept, effect and significance of the five-day school workweek were examined, and what triggers its introduction was described. And foreign cases concerned were reviewed, and a survey was conducted on the elementary school teachers and parents from Gyeonggi province to see how they looked at it. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS program. The findings of this study were as below: First, the teachers and parents investigated were relatively in favor of the five-day school workweek. They understood that it would provide more opportunities for students to contact cultural event, do on-the-spot study or take a trip, but they believed there would also be a negative that parents should put more efforts on child guidance and care. Second, the majority of the two groups had an opinion that the 7th national curricula be curtailed to keep up with the five-day workweek. Third, most of them found it desirable to take Saturdays off in case that system is implemented. The teachers generally expected it to bring about positive changes, but the parents didn't see it that way. Fourth, the vast majority of the two groups considered experience- learning program to be best for students who come to school on holidays. Fifth, both groups didn't think there were sufficient social education facilities to help make that system work out better. They predicted that abundant and diverse types of social education infrastructure would be called for. The above-mentioned findings suggested that there should be a consensus among schools, families, the government and local communities to be in cooperation for the successful five-day school workweek. In addition, that system should be supervised and aided by a separate governmental agency at national, provincial or municipal level.
