Eugene O'Neill has made a constant effort to realize the pure drama, and as a result, he made a deep impression on the American drama and gave visions to it. His most works written in the 1920's were characterizied by impressionism tinged with symbolism. He denied the existing value and pursued the thing that was the exploration of the inner world of human being which was unconscious desire, aspiration, breakdown, illusion and conflict. Among them, The Great God Brown is the work which is extremely expressed by O'Neill's unique idiosyncrasy and an appetite for writing. He used Mask to show the character's change of personality in the work. It is an experimental play for the psychological search. It is clear and moving that Eugene O'Neill's symbol reveals the confusion of one's real shape. To clarify the techniques and the themes of the Expressionism, I have found an aspect of the Expressionism and the trend of American play at that time in the second chapter. I've examined the Mask techniques and the alienation as a theme. in conclusion, I surveyed that O'Neill has dealt with self-consciousness of man deeply and developed to the meaning of human-being or the relationship between man and the universe in the third chapter. In The Great God Brown, for example, O'Neill has established the mental value and the spiritual value artistically and revealed all the symbolic system which is implied by Mask since the ancient times. I think that one of themes in The Great God Brown is the mental isolation which expresses the conflict and confrontation of the spirit; it is dualistic. Especially I think this work is focused on the disintegration of one's own self and another self, and the conflict between the reason and the instinct. The characters are under the control of the invisible power, but they recognize their isolated selves and try to rediscover them mentally. The use of 「Dion」 Mask in The Great God Brown is an important technique in that it expands the meaning of the existence and achieves the tragic vision. In addition, it is very important because it makes the real hero symbolically universal.
