Hori Tatsuo published a work which called 『Naoko』 in 「Chunokouron」 in 1941 years. 『Naoko』was valued as the work which expressed the 'love, death and life', Theme of life of Hori. Mainly I analyzed a work about the image of space and charater with 『Naoko』. The Background of this novel is O-chon, Tokyo, and a sanatorium. O-chon shows the past space. O-chon, a model of Oiwake, is an artificial space. However, an image of a space about O-chon is dependent on image of Hori about Oiwake. Oiwake is the past space being forgotten from people and the Japanese classical space. The image of a space means the loss. Tokyo shows as a realistic space. Tokyo is the hometown of Hori, but Tokyo is expressed as the image of a realistic space in this novel. The Sanatorium which is the last space shows an image of space of death at a sanatorium. It was cured that tuberculosis was a modern disease in this place. The sanatorium has an image of the solitude because of the special purpose to cure tuberculosis. By the following, I tried to analyze charater about Akira, Keisuke and Naoko who appeared in this novel. Akira is a young man who is an idealist and dreamer. He is a tragic character realizing meaning of life through the last loss, death. The Keisuke who is a husband of Naoko appears as a realist. He visited Naoko in the sanatorium and found himself newly, but he could not free himself from a society. Naoko who is a main character in a novel is an egotist. She shows a character to suffer in order to confirm own life continuously and she is a charater to be an true egoist. 『Naoko』 was announced in 1941 years. At that time, Japan was in war and had a lot of problem such as tuberculosis, depression and poverty. People could not but be spiritless in that unstable situation. Akira is a character that has shown a spiritless figure at that time. He took a trip in order to look for the ideal. But Akira found that he had already lost his ideal. He was spiritless and was finally welcomed the end of as death. Hori created the chracter of Naoko as an egoist in order to overcome it. Naoko had a tuberculosis and went into the sanatorium like a space of death. The reason that Hori had selected the tuberculosis was that the tuberculosis was a modern disease and had an symbol for appearing that time. On the contrary, Naoko found out a mental recovery in the space of death. Naoko who had the despair and the ego at the same time is a true egotist and this kind of egotism is a spirit to be coming on true life. Hori was negative and silent about his nation. However, he showed us the spirit that death and life were transcended through literature. Domestic studies about a work of Hori and a writer, Hori are not much till now, and there are also few in the paper precedent and study. The introduction about Hori is nothing except for simple fact called one modern new-psychologism writer affected by the European literature. On the other hand, Hori looked for a subject matter in a Japanese classical after death of a fiancee Yano Ayako, and the trend of the work was different from his early work, at that time. My assignment is to introduce a work of Hori in Korea. I felt necessity to study literature of Hori that was received an influence of the European literature and an influence of classical literature.
