Placement of cpTitanium implants leads to a direct bone-titanium interface histologically and the clinical situation that is defined as osseointegration. Titanium implant topography alters the extent of bone formed at the bone-implant interface. The effect of an implant surface on osseointegration is proposed to be direct and mediated by adherent cell cytokine and extracellular matrix protein biosynthesis. The aim of this investigation is to identify the difference between smooth surface and rough surface of cpTitanium substrates by comparing the cell shapes and adhesion by scanning electron microscopy. The results were as follows: 1. Implant surface topography can alter the behavior of adherent cells 2. hMSCs are able to adhere and differentiate on cpTitanium surfaces in vitro 3. More cells were adherent to smoother surfaces at earlier time, but as times go on, more bone was formed on rougher surface.
