A Study on Relationship between Psychosocial Maturity Variables and Sexual Attitude, the awareness on sexual harassment and assaults

    The development period of university students youth adolescence. To become a healthy adults as a developmental task for youth adolescence, sexual development should be achieved for physical development. In addition, for psychosocial development, sexual identity should be developed. The development of sexual identity and ethic is the main factors of developing self-esteem. In the modern society, active cultural transition is occurring thanks to industrialization, globalization, informatization, and socialization. On top of that, sex culture is becoming more and more open. According to this social atmosphere, the society is expressing many problems about sex which are the reasons for emphasizing sexual equality and conducting annual mandatory education for preventing sexual harassment and assault. However, sexual harassment and assault cases on campus are increasing every year. I started questioning the causes of increasing sexual crimes on campus and came up with the assumption that those sexual crimes may be related to psychosocial maturity and sexual attitude. Consequently, I planned to conduct the research on the awareness on sexual harassment·assault and provide the research as the basic data for sex education. The data collection of this research was provided by questionnaire. The survey was implemented to freshmen and sophomores who are in the universities which are located in Ansan. The objects are classified into two groups (i.e., the health science majors and the non health science majors). From October 10th, 2013, to November 1st, total 12 days were spent to conduct survey. 760 questionnaire papers were distributed and among them, 741 papers were collected. However, there were 11 undependable response among them, therefore 730 paper were analyzed. The SPSS 18.0 statistical program was used to analyzed the collected data. To verify the variables according to sexual characteristics, t-test was conducted. For understanding correlation between variables, the Pearson correlation coefficient was conducted. The measurement of credibility was valued by Cronbach's alpha. The results are as follows; According to the sexual characteristics variables, male students, the health science majors, and students with the sexual relation experience showed stronger psychological maturity and more open sexual attitude. About the awareness on sexual harassment·assault, female students, the health science majors, and students without sexual relation experience seemed not to be fallen into wrong common ideas. However, there was not any significant difference in psychosocial maturity, sexual attitude, and sexual harassment·assault according to the experience of sexual harassment prevention education. This implies the fact that the annual mandatory education was not effective. About the correlation between variables, the higher score in sexual attitude based on new morality (i.e., more open morality) and psychosocial maturity showed positive relationship. In addition, sexual attitude based on new morality and the awareness on sexual harassment·assault showed positive relationship. Unexpectedly, psychosocial maturity and sexual harassment·assault did not show any relationship, but the average scores of overall sexual harassment·assault variables of research objects did not accorded with existing common idea which is prevailing in our society. In implementing sexual harassment·assault prevention education, emphasizing positive and responsible attitude is important for students whose sexual attitude is becoming more and more open permissive. In addition, the education which encourage students to consider and respect others in building relationship should be conducted as regular course for continuous sex health education.
