The Effects of Reminiscence Therapy Using Fairy Tale Flash Animation on Cognition, Social Interaction and Behavior Problem of the Elderly with Dementia

    The fast movement into an aging society is expected to entail lots of social problems, including a rapid increase in the number of patients with chronic diseases. Dementia, one of the chronic diseases of elderly people, is among typical disorders that take place in senescence. That is an incurable chronic illness, and its major symptoms are cognitive and interaction disturbances, behavior problem. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of reminiscence therapy using fairy tale flash animation on the cognitive ability, social interaction and behavior problem of hospitalized patients with dementia and to make a suggestion about the development of successful programs. The subjects in this study were 24 elderly people who were selected from among dementia patients hospitalized in a geriatric hospital. After an experimental group and a control group were made up with 12 patients respectively, the program was performed three time a week in August to September 2013, for 40 minutes in each time, and 18 times in total, and then pretest and posttest were implemented. For data analysis was SPSS 18.0 version was employed to make a Mann-Whitney U Test and Wilcoxon Singed Ranks Test to see if the reminiscence therapy using fairy tale flash animation made any significant difference to the cognitive function and social interaction and behavior problem of the two groups. The results of this study are as follows. First, the experimental groups which were conducted with the reminiscence therapy using fairy tale flash animation became increasing the score of cognitive function in the elderly with dementia significantly comparing control groups. But the control group showed a significant reduction in cognitive scores, which indicated that the group reminiscence therapy program was effective in letting the dementia patients retain or improve their cognitive function. Second, the experimental groups which were conducted with the reminiscence therapy using fairy tale flash animation became increasing the score of social interaction in the elderly with dementia significantly comparing control groups. Third. the experimental groups which were conducted with the reminiscence therapy using fairy tale flash animation became decreasing the score of behavior problem in the elderly with dementia significantly comparing control groups. Besides, the experimental group exposed to the group reminiscence therapy program showed additional positive changes, such as less Aggression/frustrating behaviors, getting more self-expression. The meaning of this study is that was familiar with the subject of fairy tales, easy to focus on providing sufficient reaction time through the development for a new way of reminiscence therapy and the significance of the effect was confirmed to research through on cognitive, social interaction and behavioral problems.
