    Metro of a metropolitan city tends to have a huge impact on the use of city land as a traffic node, urban development taking place concentrated upon the city railway stations. This is a remarkably positive phenomenon because not only is the traffic axis formed around the railway but also new commercial and residential areas are, and this can lead to the outcome of local development and dispersion of urban concentration. According to “The 2030 Master Plan of Daejeon City”, the existing car-oriented transit system will be converted into a new one in which car traffic is combined with the public transportation. The metro occupies a considerably low status in the current transit system of Daejeon metropolitan city; however, the synergistic effect of public transportation is expected to significantly rise on condition that the Metro Line 2 is constructed. Despite the fact that the amount of research targeting the current Metro Line 1 is insufficient, based on hitherto research, this study hopes to make a contribution to the Daejeon urban development project by predicting a new formation of public transportation and new metro station influence areas. Previous studies on the features and types of metro station influence areas have been conducted dealing with Seoul metropolitan area and metropolitan cities which have a long history of metro construction. In the case of metro station influence areas of Daejeon urban railway, a typological study has been conducted analyzing the use of land in terms of real estate prices. This study reviews previous research literature and performs factor analysis as well as cluster analysis in order to analyze by each time slot the distribution characteristics of the people who get on and off the Daejeon metro, and to produce a typological research on the socio-economic features of metro station influence areas. In addition, metro station influence areas are classified based on the types which are revealed by the analysis results. Changes in metro station area before and after the opening and spatial characteristics in each type of metro station influence areas are identified. Setting up a metro station influence area ought to involve considering physical distance as well as the path and conditions to the station, the relationship with other means of transportation, the facilities of the station, natural conditions, and socio-economic conditions. As it is too challenging to define the range of metro station influence areas through on-site inspection taking all factors into consideration, however, we define 500m radius from metro station as the range of metro station influence area in accordance with the interpretation of Dictionary of Land & Transport Terms published by the Ministry of Land, Types of metro station area are classified by applying various conditions affecting the characteristics of the metro station influence area. First, the demand of passengers getting on and off are classified into five divisions in each time slot based on use patterns (weekdays, Saturday and Sunday) and metro station influence areas are classified using factor analysis PASW Statistics 18.0 (SPSS 18) with the accumulated data; the acquired characteristics are also analyzed according to the classified divisions. Second, a hierarchical cluster analysis is performed with socio-economic indicators affecting the land use as variables. Once the most optimal number of clusters is determined from the results of hierarchical clustering, the number of clusters is designated while it is analyzed by a non-hierarchical method. The number of cluster is set in the same as that of cluster derived from hierarchical clustering. Metro station area classified through non-hierarchical cluster analysis (K-means) method is compared with clusters of each hierarchical clustering. The denomination and implications of each cluster are clarified. Third, a non-hierarchical cluster analysis is performed with socio-economic indicators in 2005 before the opening of the metro as variables in order to identify changes in the corresponding spots in metro station influence areas. It is compared and analyzed by classifying the metro station influence areas in 2013. The results demonstrate that characteristics of metro station influence areas are classified by the pattern of using into residential-oriented and commercial-oriented functions. It is found that there are many metro station influence areas which have multiple functions. In addition, by the socio-economic indicators the metro station influences areas are classified into residential-oriented, commercial & leisure-oriented and mixed functions. Namely, the metro station influence areas in Daejeon are classified into residential, commercial & leisure function and combined ones such as commercial & business or residential, commercial & business functions. The results of this study propose the necessity to induce the urban development taking into consideration the complex characteristics of metro station influence areas rather than a function-centered development in the future by analyzing and classifying the characteristics of Daejeon metro line 1 station influence areas before the infrastructure organization and establishment of public transportation-centered car network and broad zone transit system around public traffic node under the banner of 'Public Transportation-centered City, Daejeon'. Furthermore, the typological approach on metro station influence areas according to the patterns of metro use and socio-economic features of metro station areas can derive classifications of area through analysis of use patterns and behaviors upon establishment of urban transit system, and be highly useful for organizing the transit system based on the types of socio-economic characteristics.
