사회과 교과연계 독서교육이 학업성취도에 미치는 영향

This study is aimed at exploring the impact of social studies related reading education program on the academic achievement of students. The subject related reading education is an approach that aims to understand a subject better and more deeply by utilizing the background knowledge of learners through reading education. As an educational method that offers and utilizes data related to a subject, students can acquire extensive background and conceptual knowledge. In addition, they can effectively find and form a meaning in connection with their prior knowledge. Social studies is a subject that requires deep insights into the overall context, which cannot be acquired by memorizing fragmentary information. Also, it requires extensive background knowledge, as it covers a wide variety of fields. The subject related reading education can help students stimulate their background knowledge through reading materials related to textbook concepts. As a result, the education helps students understand the social studies text better by developing and expanding their knowledge. In this study, two 4th grade classes of N Elementary School where the researcher works were selected and divided into 1 experimental class and 1 controlled class. In the experimental class, a teacher-librarian executed a program on social studies related reading education with 10 sessions, in line with the social studies curriculum. Nothing was done in the controlled group. Afterwards, the social studies achievement was measured through mid-term and final exams taken before and after the reading education. The results were analyzed statistically through a paired sample t-test. It revealed that the academic achievement of experimental class was higher than the other group. In conclusion, it is proved that social studies related reading education is effective to improve academic achievement of the students.
