A polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and polyvinylcinnamate (PVCN) microwire were attached between the two prongs of a quartz tuning fork (QTF) to form a polymer bridge. The resonance frequency and Q factor of each QTF were measured simultaneously. The resonance frequency of a PMMA wire connected QTF decreased when the relative humidity increased, because water molecules effected as a plasticizer. To enhance the signal of the QTF, additional PMMA wires were attached. The small frequency change could be amplified by increasing the number of attached wires. Similarly, exposure of a PVCN wire-connected QTF to ethanol vapor decreased the modulus of the wire, resulting in a decrease in the resonance frequency. The photocrosslinking of the PVCN wire enhanced the sensitivity of the QTF sensor and offered a facile route to developing a sensor with a tunable resonance frequency.
